Hot weather = searching for ways to cool down = Ice Cream!
On this date back in 1789, Mrs. Elizabeth Hamilton, wife of Alexander, served President George Washington ice cream for dessert. Washington seemed to have enjoyed the treat, he goes on to later purchase a “cream machine for ice” for Mount Vernon and in 1790 a New York merchant notes that Washington spent $200 on ice cream that summer…..
Here are a couple of patents from Connecticut relating to this treat. From 1914 an “Ice Cream Cone Holder” designed by William Wilson of Bridgeport and from 1922 a “Design for Ice Cream, Popcorn, Candy or Cake” from William Francis of Southington.
